Quitting your job? Here’s how to leave gracefully

Giving in your resignation letter is probably one of the biggest challenges you have to face. You have to ensure that you do it professionally. Parting ways with your previous employer before joining your new job is something you have to think over. Whatever be the reason, never burn relations or cut down connections with people you have worked with. If your organisation or boss has been bad to you, it’s not going to do you any good to voice it out before leaving. Remember that grace and poise should be maintained before you exit.

Here are a few tips on quitting your job gracefully:

Inform your manager or boss

Informing your HR about your decision to shift is different from meeting your boss in person and informing him or her about your resignation. Ensure that you get time out of your employer’s schedule to have a chat. Answer any questions and give reasons for your decision. Maintain a friendly, professional, and positive attitude.

Resignation letter

After you have met your employer personally, write a professional and simple resignation letter. Mention all the necessary details without going overboard. You could also state that you have enjoyed your time in the organisation. The resignation letter should be a formal document to state that you have taken the initiative to resign.

Notice period

Inform your manager well in advance. Read the rules and clauses set by the company. In case there is a standard notice period, be aware of it. If you are in a higher position, ensure that you have a replacement and serve in the organisation until your role has been taken care of well. If the company needs you to stay further, then be sure to complete the desired notice period. Always check the company’s policy in advance.

List of responsibilities

Make sure that you complete all your responsibilities. Leaving them halfway through will create confusion and shows a lack of professionalism. Also create a list of recommendations about how the next person and the team may go about doing their duties and roles. Chart a plan for execution. It will help keeping things straightforward. Also make sure that you can be contacted if needed.

Work hard and be pleasant

The best way to ensure a good exit is to work hard until your last day and complete all your responsibilities. Never start slacking thinking you are anyway going to leave. You might be leaving, however it is the organisation that employed you. Be pleasant with everyone till the last day and maintain good relations. You never know when you have to cross paths. The network you have will help you somewhere down the line. Your last impression matters, because people will remember it.

What you have worked so hard to build should also be maintained. And leaving your organisation amiably is necessary to ensure this.
