From a dyslexic school dropout to Oscar winner: Whoopi Goldberg shows us the power of possibilities
What does a dyslexic woman who dropped out of school at 17, the very first woman to host the Academy Awards solo, and the second African-American woman in history to win an Oscar have in common? Answer: they’re all Whoopi Goldberg.
Born Caryn Elaine Johnson on November 13, 1955, Whoopi Goldberg is one of the most celebrated and well-recognised actresses in the world today. Known perhaps best for her stellar performances in The Colour Purple (1985), Ghost (1990), Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987), and Sister Act (1992), Goldberg has had a long and eventful career, but acting wasn’t her first job. In fact, before becoming an actress, she previously worked as a bank teller, a bricklayer, and even in a mortuary at various points in her life.
One of only four actresses to have ever won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award – the so-called ‘quadruple crown of acting’ – Goldberg continues to be a great source of inspiration for people everywhere. She is extremely vocal on issues related to race and gender and has helped Comic Relief in almost every benefit concert they have ever organised.
On her 62nd birthday, we salute Whoopi Goldberg’s indomitable spirit with 10 of her best and most iconic quotes. May they bring you as much motivation and inspiration as they do us!
