How this gallery promotes art as 'a liberator of the soul' – and a sustainable business
Gallery Moksh in Mumbai has managed to survive over the decades by trading a wide range of art – and also inspiring visitors and fans of culture.

Tucked away in an alley of the Kala Ghoda district in south Mumbai, Gallery Moksh is a treasure trove of Indian art. The gallery is packed with the paintings of a wide range of artists, some of whom are showcased in this photo essay: AJ Moujan, Shashikant Dhotre, Govind Dumbre, Madhumita Bhattacharya, Sharad Kale, Rajesh Ramkumar, Sanjay Mal, Ramesh Pachpande, Girish Gharat, Yashwant Shirwadkar, Yuvraj Patil, Anirban Seth, Sachin Kharat, Shakeel Momin, and others.
The art works include acrylic, water colours and charcoal, rendered on boards, canvas and paper. Some mixed media works are sprinkled in as well, spanning everything from abstract and figurative to landscape and seascape.
The charming art district is subject to lots of intense debate on whether its cultural soul will survive the growth of high-end commercial establishments, but Gallery Moksh has managed to sustain itself over the decades. Prices of the art works range from Rs 30,000 to Rs 3 lakhs, and the art works are sold online as well to buyers across the country.
