Chef Vikas Khanna reunites with the family that saved him during 1992 Mumbai riots
Since 1992, Chef Vikas Khanna has been fasting for a day every Ramadan in the honor of the family that saved his life. The year 1992, which saw Mumbai burning, holds close memory to him as he was saved by a Muslim family. Twenty six-years later, the New-York based celebrity chef recently united with the family.
Taking it to Twitter, he recently announced the reunion, after he broke his Ramadan fast with the family. Vikas said,
Heartwarming evening. All Heart. Tears. Pain. Pride. Courage. Humanity. Gratitude. Heartwarming evening. This will be the most significant and important Eid of my life. Thank you everyone to connect me with my souls.
In 1992, when Vikas was stuck in the kitchen of Sea Rock Sheraton in Mumbai, Iqbal Khan and Wasim, who were serving as the Trainee chef and waiter, risked their lives to save him. While the city burnt, thousands of people lost their lives and unfortunately, it included Iqbal and Wasim too. "Since that year, I fast for one day during the holy month of Ramzan, to thank them and keep them in my prayers. Love you all, he added."
While there were rioters visiting every house to make inquiries, Vikas took shelter and stayed with a Muslim family. When someone asked about him, the family hid his real identity and called him their 'son', says NewsCentral.
Speaking about the day in a previous interview to NDTV, he had said, "For nearly two days, I slept on their floor. I don't know who they were or where I was during that time." In an interview on a talk show with Bollywood actor Anupam Kher, he had shared about how on one day he had observed two extreme sides of human nature.
