A knock on the right door - Meet Komal Gupta, the 'delivery girl' who is breaking stereotypes
In the wake of ecommerce, food-tech and home deliveries are a no-brainer. Like many cities in the country that fall back upon the delivery system as a service, the national capital is no different. In the busy streets of Delhi, one can spot delivery boys at any instant but, how frequently does one spot a delivery girl?
Riding through the bustling streets is Komal Gupta, knocking and delivering the orders and breaking stereotypes, as she goes. Komal is employed with Even Cargo, India’s first women-only-ecommerce logistics company in New Delhi. The company trains more than a dozen employees to work as delivery personnel for online vendors. It is not just an ecommerce player, but a social enterprise that employs women from the poor community.
Komal (22) has been working for the past three months as a delivery consultant and is going door-to-door delivering packages. Though she lives in Delhi, she could never explore the city, and this job lets her do that, she confesses in a conversation with The Quint.
I’d hardly ever gone out of Trilokpuri. Because of this job, I could explore Connaught Place, Rajendra Nagar – something I had never imagined. I was scared of different routes and getting lost, but I told myself it will be alright and that I will be able to find my way back home after work.
After Komal’s father passed away, she had to support her family financially, which made her take up a job. Komal lives in Trilokpuri with her family - her mother works in a school canteen, and her brother has taken over her father’s ice-cream cart.
This is Komal's first job and recalling the day she received her first salary, she says, "I gave most of it to my mother. Earning money is very empowering. I give my salary to my mother and use the rest to fund my education," she says.
In the past, the company that is championing the cause of employing women as delivery 'boys,' has also changed the life of another girl called Seema says News 18.
