The growing heatwave challenge

Delhi, India's capital, is notorious for its extreme weather conditions, with summers becoming increasingly unbearable. In recent years, the city has seen record-breaking heat waves, with temperatures recently touching 52.9°C (127.2°F). These heat waves pose serious health risks, leading to heat strokes and dehydration and exacerbating existing environmental issues such as air pollution and water scarcity.

Traditional cooling methods and their limitations

Traditionally, air conditioning has been the go-to solution for combating heat. However, this method is far from sustainable. Air conditioners are energy-intensive, leading to higher electricity consumption and increased greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, the widespread use of air conditioning can strain the power grid, leading to blackouts during peak usage times. This situation creates a paradox where efforts to cool the environment actually contribute to global warming, creating a vicious cycle.

Innovative climate technologies to the rescue

To break this cycle, innovative climate technologies are being developed and implemented. These technologies focus on reducing temperatures in urban areas through more sustainable and energy-efficient means. Here are some of the most promising innovations:

Renewable energy-based technologies

Investing in renewable energy technologies is crucial for India's decarbonisation. Solar, wind, and hydropower offer sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Green hydrogen

Green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy sources, is emerging as a clean fuel alternative. It can decarbonise sectors that are hard to electrify, such as heavy industry and long-haul transportation. India's National Hydrogen Energy Mission aims to boost the production and utilisation of green hydrogen, positioning the country as a global leader in this transformative technology. Investing in green hydrogen infrastructure will support deep decarbonisation across various industries.

Carbon capture

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies capture carbon dioxide emissions from industrial processes and power plants, preventing them from entering the atmosphere. These technologies are essential for reducing emissions from existing fossil fuel infrastructure. India can benefit from CCS by retrofitting its coal-based power plants, thereby achieving significant emission reductions while transitioning to a low-carbon economy.

Digital technologies

Digital technologies, including IoT, AI, and big data, are critical in enhancing climate adaptation and mitigation efforts. Smart grids, for example, optimise energy distribution and reduce losses, while precision agriculture leverages data analytics to improve crop yields and resource efficiency. Digital solutions also enable better monitoring and management of natural resources, enhancing resilience to climate impacts.

Beyond immediate cooling benefits, these innovative climate technologies contribute to broader environmental and societal goals. As Delhi and other cities around the world continue to battle rising temperatures, innovative climate technologies offer a promising path forward. The journey towards mitigating the heat is about leveraging technological advancements and rethinking our relationship with the built environment and prioritising sustainability in urban planning and development.
