Humour, passion, connection: Montreal Comiccon celebrates summer edition
In this photo essay from Canada, we showcase the creativity of participants at this must-attend annual comics convention.
Launched in 2014, PhotoSparks is a weekly feature from YourStory, with photographs that celebrate the spirit of creativity and innovation. In the earlier 1,010 posts, we featured an art festival, cartoon gallery. world music festival, telecom expo, millets fair, climate change expo, wildlife conference, startup festival, Diwali rangoli, and jazz festival.
This summer, Montreal Comiccon held its annual convention at Palais des Congrès in downtown Montreal. The multi-genre pop culture convention showcases the best in comic books, sci-fi, toys, movies, video games, and other entertainment IP, along with cosplay (costume and play) competitions.
An estimated 60,000 attendees flock to the three-day event, which includes an exhibition hall, artist alley, corporate booths, expert panels, and film screenings for pop culture fans of all ages. The event attracts the anglophone as well as francophone population markets of Montreal, thus serving as a bridge between US, Canadian and French markets.
Each year, an estimated 50 countries and 150 cities around the world host events centred around the culture and business of comics (see our earlier coverage of Comic Con India here). Montreal is also host to one of the world’s largest jazz festivals, the Montreal International Jazz Festival (see our coverage of earlier editions of the festival from 2015 onwards here).
Montreal Comiccon serves as a gathering place for people who share a passion for storytelling, creativity and imaginative worlds. It appeals to lifelong comic book readers as well as newcomers discovering the world of superheroes and fantasy.
As shown in this photo essay, people from different ages come together to celebrate the characters and stories they love. The welcoming atmosphere spills over into nearby parks, cafes and metro stations, and encourages friendships through self-expression.
The comics industry has played a significant role in shaping popular culture for well over a century. Comics combine visual art with storytelling, creating a unique medium that appeals to a diverse spectrum of readers. It effectively combines entertainment, education and inspiration.
One of the comics industry's greatest strengths is its ability to communicate complex ideas through words, images and animation. Readers can easily follow action and character development while enjoying vibrant artwork. Because of this accessibility, comics often encourage literacy among young readers.
The comics industry has also become a major economic force. Successful comic book characters have expanded into blockbuster films, television series, streaming shows, video games, toys, and merchandise. These adaptations generate billions of dollars worldwide while introducing comic stories to new audiences.
Independent creators have also benefited from the industry's growth. Modern publishing platforms allow artists and writers to share original stories without relying solely on major publishers.
Graphic novels now cover a wide range of genres, including history, memoir, science fiction, romance, horror, and educational topics. This demonstrates that comics are far more than superhero adventures.
One of the most exciting aspects of comic conventions is the practice of dressing up as fictional characters from comics, movies, television, anime, and video games. For many participants, cosplay is much more than wearing a costume – it is a creative hobby that combines craftsmanship, performance and personal expression.
Preparing customised costumes teaches valuable skills such as sewing, painting, sculpting, problem-solving, and attention to detail. Completing a costume provides a strong sense of accomplishment and pride.
Wearing a costume also allows participants to step into the role of a beloved character. Children and adults alike enjoy pretending to be superheroes, villains, fantasy warriors, or animated characters. This playful experience encourages imagination and confidence, allowing people to express themselves in ways they might not in everyday life.
Cosplay also creates a welcoming sense of community. Participants often compliment each other's work, exchange crafting tips, and pose together for photographs. Many friendships begin simply because two people recognise a shared favorite character or series.
Perhaps most importantly, costumes help create the magical atmosphere that makes Comic Con events around the world so memorable. Walking through the convention feels like stepping into a world where fictional universes come to life.
Every space is filled with colorful characters, smiling fans and creative designs. For participants, dressing up is not only fun but also a celebration of imagination, creativity, fandom, and the joy of sharing their passions with others.
