KAYAK is an American online travel agency and metasearch engine owned and operated by Booking Holdings.

Basic Information

KAYAK was founded in January 2004 by Steve Hafner and Paul M. English. Kayak's website and mobile apps are currently available in over 18 languages and more than 30 countries. A simple search on KAYAK scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. Whether one is looking for flights, hotels, car hire, or more, they gather deals from across the web and puts them in one place. Prices come straight from the travel sites to the screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK. When the customer has chosen their preferred deal, the provider of that deal simply pays KAYAK for either redirecting the customer to their site or helping them to book with them. This makes their service totally free for users. With hotels, the 'Recommended' algorithm is based on a few key factors. They mainly rely on the price, the hotel’s guest rating and its popularity (measured in clicks). They also factor in the average revenue potential for KAYAK from each hotel result. See more
