India is a country full of beauty and ancient wisdom about mind-body health and spirituality. It is a fast growing destination for wellness tourism, with travellers from around the world flocking in search for inner peace.

Here are 3 principles that India can teach the world about health:

1. The power of Yoga

Yoga is a wonderful exercise which benefits not only your body but your brain too. The benefits of such exercise are countless including helping burn more calories, aiding in stress release, finding inner peace, increasing energy, flexibility, posture, and mindfulness.

Historically yoga was not just exercise but a way of life. One of the biggest draw cards of yoga is that it can be practiced anywhere and anytime. It does not require equipment or a certain environment, just your body and mind.

Some yoga methods and poses focus specifically on meditation, connecting the mind and breath to quieten the 'chatter' inside our heads. This can help reduce stress and foster relaxation.

2. Turmeric

A popular spice used in Indian cooking, turmeric is a vibrant yellow-orange colour. Often praised for it's medical, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties turmeric can be found in many Indian dishes as well as tea.

It is thought that the anti-inflammatory properties in turmeric help ease inflammation and swelling of those with arthritis. It is also thought to help prevent Alzheimer's disease, some forms of cancer, boost the immune system, lower cholesterol and treat uveitis.

3. Intermittent fasting

Fasting is an integral part of Indian culture and tradition, often for religious and spiritual reasons. Known as Vrat, fasting is related to willingly abstaining from certain food, drink or both for a period of time.

While fasting may seem counter-intuitive for health there are a number of proven health benefits to intermittent fasting. It is said to help prevent cancer, Alzheimer's disease, reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, induce cellular repairs, assist with heart health and help with weight loss.
