“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream…” – C.L. Lewis. Once we know what we want, the next move is to set our goals. A good professional knows what he wants and what the importance of setting achievable goals is.

So the million dollar question is: What is a goal? A goal is our ultimate wish, dream, desire and source of happiness that we want to attain badly. Right goal can be decided only after through self-introspection and self-realization. We need to be very careful as this stage, we need to resolve all the confusions and get rid of any error which could possibly harm us in future because all our activities will be solely goal oriented. Any mistake at this point can cause a deal of big trouble for us.

In software development, before setting a goal, we need to pay attention to few important aspects which could help us to choose a right and achievable goal. First of all, our goal has to specific. No confusion should remain in our mind. Once we set our goal, make a resolution to achieve or complete it any cost. For example, if our goal is to work with Google or be a RAW agent, we must stick to it in all situations.

Our goal should not be abstract, it must have a sense of certainty. A goal must be Measurable and achievable. This must be decided only after an analysis of our wish, skill set, our academic education and immediate circumstances. This would help us to realize our goal and can make the right strategy to achieve that. For instance suppose, you are a very good engineering scholar, but also like Tennis, you have very good knowledge of Tennis game, but you never played it. In this situation, do not get confused because tennis is your likeness, but you are expert in engineering background.

Our goal has to be meaningful and relevant. Sometimes goals are of such kind that it is fascinating for certain period of time, but later on loses its importance and relevancy. For example, usually a girl pursing her career in sports as an athlete cannot be able to continue her goal for a long time, future circumstances post marriage might create many problems in her personal as well as professional life.
