Daughter of domestic help and tailor tops JAC Class 12 exams
Nandita Haripal topped the Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) Class 12 board exams in the arts stream, securing 83.8 percent marks.
When the lockdown was announced on March 25, the Indian government asked schools and colleges to shut, postponing or cancelling the board exams that were underway.
Despite this collateral damage caused by the novel coronavirus, Nandita Haripal topped the Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) Class 12 board exams in the arts stream, securing 83.8 percent marks.
"I was surprised when I heard the news. I didn't expect I would top the state exams. I want to become a journalist," Nandita Haripal told ANI.
The aspiring journalist added, “I regularly attended classes, made a study schedule, and studied at home. Apart from this, I also attended a coaching class."
Hailing from Kadma, Jharkhand, Nandita lives with her parents in the Bhatia Basti, where her father works as a tailor, and her mother works as a domestic help in a nearby colony.
Despite the difficulties of making ends meet, her parents ensured that her education was functioning smoothly and that she did not have to face any problems around it.
"My parents have always been supportive of our studies. They do not let financial constraints affect our studies. Nobody should consider him or herself weak. It is not necessary that one succeeds only by taking tuitions. However, they must attend classes regularly," she said.
Regarding their daughter's success, her father Rajesh Haripal told Edex Live, "I will leave no stone unturned to help her study further. Parents must support their children in their studies and not put pressure on them.”
As soon as the results were announced on Friday, the Principal of Jamshedpur Women’s College Shukla Mohanty called up Nandita to congratulate her, while also promising her free education and hostel facility for her further studies.
