Mizoram-based MLA and doctor performs emergency surgery to save pregnant woman
With his 30-year experience in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, doctor-turner-MLA Z R Thiamsanga helps deliver a baby via C-section of a woman in the Ngur village.
Despite his priorities as a politician, an MLA from Mizoram who was visiting his constituency in the Champai district to assess the damages of the earthquake-hit areas, performed an emergency surgery on a woman whose doctor was on leave due to health issues.
“An MLA’s duty is to look after the welfare of the people he or she represents. But as a doctor, I do not confine myself within my constituency when people need medical attention,” Z. R. Thiamsanga told The Hindu.
Thiamsanga is a doctor with over 30 years of experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and represents the Champhai North Assembly constituency for the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF).
On Monday, C. Lalhmangaihsangi from the Ngur village in Champai, near the Myanmar border, was bleeding profusely and going through severe labour pains. Luckily, Thiamsanga responded as soon as he heard about it, and helped her deliver the baby through Caesarean section.
“The lady was in the remote village of Ngur and was expecting her second child. She was in acute labour and her situation was critical as she was severely bleeding and her haemoglobin was also extremely low,” Thiamsanga told The Indian Express.
“I told them to reach the civil hospital in Champhai and performed the surgery at 9:30 am. The surgery was a success and both mother and child are now safe,” he added.
This wasn’t the first time that the doctor-turned-MLA helped out a person in need of medical attention. He had arranged the transfer of a pregnant woman from her home to the nearby hospital.
“In Saiha District, a remote area in Mizoram, there was a lady in labour and the child was in a transverse position. So I knew the baby could not be delivered there. As they were very poor, I hired a vehicle to take them to the Saiha hospital where the gynaecologist treated the lady and the baby was delivered,” he said.
Z R Thiamsanga, the vice-chairman of the Health and Family Welfare Board, retired in 2018 after serving the Aizawl Civil Hospital, Mizoram’s largest healthcare facility. He then contested in the elections in 2018 on a Mizo National Front ticket and won.
Despite being in the field of politics, the doctor-politician makes sure to carry a stethoscope and a medical kit in case of any emergencies he comes across during this travels.
