Supriya Pherwani, Founder, Cocoon

Tuesday September 01, 2009 , 3 min Read

Armed with a B.Tech and a Diploma in Fashion Designing, Supriya Pherwani asserts that Cocoon - a fashion retail and manufacturing store - “has emerged out of the shell and is ready to take on the fashion industry.” Cocoon is the brainchild of three young entrepreneurs, Supriya Pherwani, Balaji KL, and Prasun Nambiar, and their vision for 2010 is to establish two more branches.

“Cocoon is a fashion retail and manufacturing store which has carved a niche for itself in the span of three years. In Cocoon we experiment with fabrics, cuts, styles and embroidery. Our USP has been the personalised attention to our clients.”

What are the various stages that lead to the final product? “Fabrics are personally sourced from all over India, embroidered, dyed, textured and made into a finished product. Cocoon offers clothes that are considered classic but are eminently wearable even after fads die out. It offers casuals and club wear, and clothes you can wear to work. We customise clothes for all ages and do bridal trousseau as well. ” Not only is the range of clothing offered by Cocoon impressive, but it also makes space for individual preferences. Clothing can be customised to suit the individual tastes and needs of customers, and it is this flexibility that gives Cocoon the edge over other brands. “We understand the needs of the client and have a one-on-one relationship with the client,” says Supriya. The attention paid to the overall appearance of the garments has not compromised the element of comfort, which Supriya believes is the primary need of a customer.

The two apparently contradictory aims of making space for individual choice and providing considerable variety of clothing do not make Cocoon one of the most expensive brands of clothing available in the market; in fact, their affordable prices ensure that they remain in a good position to compete with other brands.

How has Supriya been able to maintain her motivation for over three years? “From the beginning, everyday has been a challenge and a learning experience. The biggest one was getting the most skilled team. There have been so many days that I have wanted to quit, since doing your own thing takes much more than just time, energy and money. You have to put your heart and soul into it. The passion and love for creativity has let the zeal in me to keep the brand alive.”

Apart from a dedicated clientele and an extremely skilled team, touring the country with exhibitions and shows have ensured recognition for the brand. Future plans of expansion include establishing “the brand in various cities all over India, and open a chain of stores”, and to widen their clientele, Cocoon will explore lifestyle products and accessories.

Despite the success she has enjoyed over the last three years, Supriya does not forget the support she had received from family and friends in the early days of Cocoon, before it had consolidated its clientele and made plans for expansion. She claims that being awarded the Best Team in the JD Annual Awards remains her most memorable moment.

Her inspirational words to budding entrepreneurs is to never give up on their dreams and ambitions, and remain focussed on what they're doing. Hard work is the only way to success. YourStory wishes her the best for future endeavours.
