Utsav Dholakia, Fashion Show Choreographer

Utsav is well known in the fashion circuits for his choreography and the success which his work has brought him. He spoke his heart out to Yourstory about the career he has always wanted to pursue and the directions he has decided to take.

Utsav never wanted to be in the 9 to 5 job category. It is his opinion that when you are working for a salary the creativity inside you dries up too soon. He thus chose to be an entrepreneur in life and keep his creativity at its peak. His work as a fashion choreographer gives him to lots of freedom to think and creativity to show his talent which has been the mainstay of his entrepreneurial quest.

A master of his trade he is skilled at presenting informal fashion shows where a stage or catwalk is not used. Here the models walk into the audience ensuring that the audience gets a closure view of designer garments. He has choreographed innumerable such informal shows for tresorie -the fashion stores, the Bombay stores, centre one-Vashi, kbn stores, Charag din shirts, Provogue, vhm international suitings, Pramanik sarees, etc.

Neither his fame nor his success came easily to him and the initial period was one of struggle. Utsav started his career in 1994 and he was a floundering for 2 to 3 years in the industry before he started getting shows. His self belief won through and he organized many shows, corporate events, coordinated international events in many countries and choreographed a mega fashion show in Canada in 1998 with many Bollywood superstars including Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Juhi Chawla, and Kajol.

Utsav has 16 years of in-depth experience in the field of fashion and has organized numerous shows in India and abroad. He has been honored by the Mayor of Kingston - London. He was also associated with the “Vibrant Gujarat” campaign 2006 and 2007 at Rajkot and Bhuj.

After all his experiences and interactions with various professionals Utsav feels that comparatively Indian technicians are the best in the world in terms of the fashion industry. He professes to his preferences revealing that he always prefers to work with Indian technicians in his shows.Utsav wants to continue his career as fashion choreographer and finds immense satisfaction in his work. However as a matter of professional evolution and personal desire he like everyone else has a dream to work with films. In this too as with his choreography an unyielding focus shall undoubtedly see Utsav through.
