As of 2011, India grows at 1.3% of the current population of over a billion. India also exhibits a trend of a large percentile of the population moving to the cities, making Indian cities one of the most populous cities in the world. While this trend is a good sign in terms of the opportunities that the cities provide, the infrastructure of the cities cannot handle this massive population and day to day activities.

The shopping nightmare

Wading through the traffic, finding the right place to shop, finding appropriate parking space for your vehicles, waiting in long queues to checkout are issues faced by the general public in the daily affair of grocery shopping.

While large grocery retail shops have alternatives such as online portals and teleshopping, to address these issues of the customer, the reality is that only a small chunk of the population shops at the superstores and the number of stores with these facilities are too small to address everyone’s needs. The larger percentile of people must deal with the above stated issues.

Delivery on call – the who and the what

Mr. Ankur Mehrotra, CEO of Deliveryoncall.com set up the company to give easy solutions to the day to-day needs of the customers and bring comfort in their lives. Delivery on call, a brand owned by Deep Roots, is a shopping portal which enlists various vendors in the Noida and Indrapuram localities of New Delhi. Vendors under the categories of Grocery, Food, Bakery, Meat Shops, Pet Shops and more recently, Laundry Shops are available on the website. Under each category, there are relevant shops, under which the relevant articles for sale are enlisted.

Based on the policy of the vendors, payment can be made online or on delivery. Once a user has checked out, Delivery on Call delivers the ordered goods to the user’s doorstep. The intention is that the customers can shop from the comforts of their home and saving on time and effort. Delivery on Call covers order delivery for a radius of 12 – 15 Kms at no extra charge for the customer.

A solution for the Masses

The value proposition provided by Delivery on Call is a win-win for the consumer and for the vendor. It provides convenience for the customer at no extra charge and provides the vendor with an extended catchment area for the customers.

With future plans of expanding their services to five more cities in the next four months, this model could soon be the norm for shopping for the urban population.

However, scaling will require a large work force and professional management, and it will be interesting to see how this promising start up handles this.
