Fostering Startup Innovation, YourStory Meetup with IBM Bluemix – a quick recap
We, at YourStory, in collaboration with IBM Bluemix hosted a meetup on 13th June, at our Bangalore office. The meetup brought together a select gathering of high-tech entrepreneurs to meet and greet with IBM Bluemix team. Radhesh Kanumury, who leads the Global Entrepreneur Program for IBM India and South Asia, conducted an informative and interactive session for entrepreneurs about IBM Bluemix. Radhesh mentors startups to see how their business models can be enhanced, identifying areas where technology can play a role. And lastly guide them if IBM would have a role to play in technology and go-to-market. He is also a mentor to Incubation Centers and Engineering Universities.
What is IBM Bluemix?
Bluemix is an implementation of IBM’s Open Cloud Architecture, leveraging Cloud Foundry and with SoftLayer acting as the underpinning of the platform, to enable developers to rapidly build, deploy, and manage their cloud applications, while IBM will provide services and runtimes into the ecosystem based on their software portfolio. It is a PaaS that helps to frame and launch an application more easily than with the raw resources of an Infrastructure as a Service cloud offering.

- We are seeing an evolution of the market needs – just app/database sever is not enough.
- SoftLayer Infrastructure as a Service (#IaaS) – more than virtual machines
- IBM Bluemix delivers composable services for building an environment – run apps, manage/deploy code, use mobile APIs
- IBM Bluemix gives access to IBM services, open source assets and other certified components
- A demo of creating and hosting a YourStory app – service gets virtualised, cache gets deployed
- Users can be given spaces and controls, along with quotas and access
- Runtime variables and instances can be visible to startups, along with features for analysis
- CloudFoundry provides for multiple languages, frameworks and services (from Java to PHP)
- IBM’s CloudFoundry architecture stack – routing, authentication, app lifecycle, health manager, messaging, metrics/logging
- IBM Bluemix future content – M2M, smart analytics, new media. Demo: Internet of things (IoT boilerplate)
