Remembering Yatharth, the toddler who saved 4 lives through organ donation before leaving us
Only two months before celebrating his third birthday, Yatharth Upadhyaya left us. But his heart continues to beat, his eyes continue to see, and his liver and kidney continue to function. Yatharth lives on through four other children.
Suffering from persistent fever, leading to seizure and cardiac arrest, Yatharth was admitted in Bengaluru’s Manipal Hospital only about a year ago, where he was declared brain dead. His parents Rajalaxmi and Amit Upadhyaya gave their consent to harvest and donate his organs. “I told my wife that we could save some other parents the pain and help their children live. It was Yatharth’s chance to live through other children. My father and she were very supportive,” Amit told the students of IIJNM Bangalore, later reported by the DNA.
A team of five doctors and five staff nurses came down from Chennai to harvest Yathatrh’s heart with assistance from local doctors. The heart was airlifted and transplanted successfully into a 33-month-old child. Yatharth’s liver, kidneys, and cornea were donated to different families in Bengaluru. Speaking to Bangalore Mirror, Amit, a native of Jharkhand said, “We had full faith in the medical system, but it let us down by taking our son away. With this effort, at least he will be alive even after death.”
Yatharth left us around the same time last year. But he continues to live, smile, and play. His heart beats and his eyes continue to see the world. We express our sincere gratitude to his parents Amit and Rajalaxmi. They have endured a lot, and it is because of people like them that the world is a nicer and better place today.
