[PhotoSparks] A salute to cartoonists and artists promoting women’s empowerment

[PhotoSparks] A salute to cartoonists and artists promoting women’s empowerment

Saturday March 12, 2016 , 2 min Read

PhotoSparks is a weekly feature from YourStory, with photographs that celebrate the spirit of creativity and innovation. In this photo essay, in keeping with the spirit of International Women’s Day celebrated this week, we showcase cartoonists and artists promoting women’s empowerment through their powerful and evocative creative works.

In the earlier 85 posts, we brought you a wide range of creative photographs from an art fair, world music festival, painting fair, telecom expo, art museum, mobile showcase, math museum, social hackathon, bookstore, co-working space, sensorium, international design week, flower show, outdoor ads, startup roadshow, computer museum, startup T-shirts, business cards, art therapy, startup festival, Diwali rangoli, Vesak, jazz festival, modern art gallery, ecopreneurs, painter-poets, health activists, eNGOs and digital innovators.

For two weeks, Bangalore’s Rangoli Metro Art Centre and the Indian Cartoon Gallery are honouring the women’s rights movement with special exhibitions of paintings and cartoons, respectively. The Akanksha Group featured the works of 61 women artists at the Metro Centre, and the Indian Institute of Cartoonists showcased award-winning international works curated by online cartoon magazine Toons Mag (founded by Arifur Rahaman from Bangladesh).

The cartoons and paintings cut across barriers of language and culture, and the galleries did not need captions to explain their powerful messages of change and justice in the face of discrimination. YourStory salutes the spirit of creativity and empowerment promoted by these artists, which should be celebrated not just on International Women’s Day but throughout the year!
