Staying active at work will change your life

Staying active at work will change your life

Wednesday June 14, 2017 , 3 min Read

The dangers of a sedentary lifestyle, especially at work, has been discussed among various quarters and even been called the new cancer. Our biomechanical and anatomical structure was never designed to sit static on a chair all-day long. With a work-around-the-clock mentality, falling into a sedentary lifestyle with minimal movement has become inevitable, hence overcoming physical idleness is the new challenge most professionals face. On an average, adults sit for 11-plus hours in a day, but reducing daily “sitting time” by even 1 to 2 hours per day could have a significant and positive impact on future cardiovascular health. It is therefore upon each one of us to keep our bodies active even while we are at work.

Here's how movement at work can change your life.

Try walking meetings

Meetings on the move are the new in-thing in the corporate world. Walking meetings allow you to connect with your co-workers and get a breath of fresh air. The change of scenery and increased blood-flow are bound to further stimulate creativity and improve communication. Also, since you're not surrounded by technology, chances are you'll be less distracted.

Face to face communication

Instead of sending an inconsequential email, jump up from your seat and go talk to your colleagues in-person. When you do this, you'll not only be moving around a lot more than you usually do, but you'll develop more friendly and easy-going relationships with your colleagues.

Brainstorm on your feet

Try conducting brainstorming sessions on your feet. The physical act of standing gives you a more positive state of mind and also provides a sense of freedom while you're working. Standing also lowers your cortisol levels, which reduces stress and gives you the feeling of being in control of your day.

Take regular breaks

It is advisable to take a five-minute break after every one hour of working to rejuvenate your mind and focus. Going for a short walk will help you clear your mind and improve your productive.

Use a standing desk

If you have the liberty to work from home, you should consider investing in a standing desk. A standing desk counteracts anxiety and stress levels and is known to leave a person using it more energized and invigorated during their day. According to a US research, standing while working can boost productivity by up to 53%.

Standing and moving throughout the workday is an essential step in the direction of improving your health. Keep the above mentioned tips in mind to bring about positive changes in your physical and mental well-being.
