Today any business, big or small, generates a significant amount of data. Even if your business has a basic online presence through a website, social media, or even online payments, you have access to a huge amount of customer information, some of it sensitive in nature.

So it is no longer optional for companies to just sit on this data. Regardless of the nature and scale of their business, they need to have a strategy in place for Big Data and a plan on how to gather, deploy, and protect the reams of data at their disposal. As data collection, analysis, and interpretation become more readily accessible, they will impact your business in significant ways.

And who better qualified to explain this significant role Big Data will play in our lives than DJ Patil, who is regarded one of the most influential data scientists in the world. Patil was appointed the first-ever US Chief Data Scientist by former US President Barack Obama in 2015, and was tasked with making the largest organisation in history — the US Federal Government — a data-driven enterprise.

He previously served as the Vice President of Product at RelateIQ, which was acquired by Salesforce.com, as Chief Product Officer of Color Labs, and as Head of Data Products and Chief Scientist of LinkedIn. He has also lent his expertise in various capacities at Skype, PayPal, and eBay.

He is credited with having coined the term “data science” along with Cloudera co-founder Jeff Hammerbacher.

OLA Master Class with DJ Patil is brought to you in partnership with YourStory. As part of Ola’s on-going Master Class series, catch the Former US Chief Data Scientist in conversation Shradha Sharma, Founder and Chief Editor at YourStory, in Bengaluru on July 20, 2017, between 6.00 pm and 8.00 pm.
