While track repairs and unfavourable weather conditions cannot be avoided, it is possible to improve passenger experience by alerting them to such conditions, and that is exactly what Indian Railways has in store for Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains. Passengers will now receive a text message if their train is delayed by more than an hour.
This facility, made operational a few days ago, will be in addition to the SMS confirmation of berths being sent to wait-listed passengers. Although presently applicable only for Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains, it will be soon extended to all trains, IANS has reported.
To avail the service, passengers have to mention their mobile numbers on reservation slips. The SMS is a free value-added service, the cost of which will be borne by the Railways.
According to PNS, a senior railway official said,
“To avail this facility, passengers are advised to mention their mobile numbers on the reservation slips. It is a passenger-friendly free service for which the railways bear the cost of SMS.”
It has been developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS).
The service has been extended to all the Rajdhani (23 pairs) and Shatabdi (26 pairs) trains in the country after a trial run on some of them to find and repair the glitches in the facility.
This comes at a time when a lot of premium trains are being revamped under the 'Swarn' project at a cost of Rs 50 lakh each. The first train to be flagged off after the overhaul was the New Delhi-Kathgodam Shatabdi Express on November 6. The total budget allocated for the project of revamping about 30 trains is Rs 25 crore.
