Karnataka Nuclear power plant sets world record for continuous operation
Unit 1 of nuclear power plant Kaiga Atomic Power Station has surpassed the record set by the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station in Canada by being operational for 894 days.
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited recently announced that the Kaiga Atomic Power Station in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka has the best record for continuous operation globally.
Unit 1 of the power plant also holds the best record for the same among the Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR).
Managed and run by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited, the unit has been in continuous operation since May 13, 2016.
So far it has surpassed the record of 894 days set by Pickering Nuclear Generating Station in Canada, reports The News Minute.
The entire is indigenously PHWR built and powered by domestic fuel. Prior to setting the current world record, it had surpassed domestic power plants. It surpassed the Unit 5 of Rajasthan Atomic Power Station in 2014.
Located 56 km away from Karwar in Karnataka, the Kaiga plant is operational since 2000, after it was built in 1989. Now, it supplies to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana besides supplying to Karnataka reports Business Today.
The indigenously-built nuclear plant has been developed by Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL). It also provides the steam run generator for Unit 1 of Kaiga Station’ operations and has been a partner for four decades.
India currently has 22 reactors operated by NPCIL with a total capacity of 6,780 MW, among which eight reactors with a combined capacity of 6,200 MW are under construction.
