Dholera, India’s first greenfield industrial city all set to take off

Dholera located near the Gulf of Khambhat in Gujarat will be India’s first greenfield industrial city that boasts of India’s largest open green space.

Dholera in Gujarat is all set to become India’s first greenfield industrial city at a cost of Rs 3,000 crore. The plan is aimed to develop infrastructure for industrial development in the saline region of the city located near the Gulf of Khambhat.

According to an official statement to the Press Trust of India, the basic infrastructural facilities in the first phase are scheduled to be completed by September this year. For this, the Dholera Special Investment Region Development Authority (DSIRDA) has awarded Rs 2,800 crore worth of contracts work prior to the arrival of industries for developing the basic infrastructure.

This means the basic infrastructure for Dholera Special Investment Region and initiation area of 22.5 km will be ready in the near future

Money Control quoted the CEO of Dholera Special Investment Region Development Authority (DSIRDA) Jai Prakash Shivhare saying,

Many countries, especially China, are developing new cities. India has developed many greenfield cities. Dholera is the first greenfield industrial city that is being developed in the country. Dholera is now ready to take off.

The upcoming smart city will comprise stormwater drains, underground ducts, electricity and water supply, wastewater discharge, wide roads including better connectivity, reports the Financial Express.

In a move to provide housing for all, the city will earmark 10 percent of its area for economically weaker sections. It will also house 11 percent of the open green area, which is touted to be the largest in the country. The tap water in the upcoming city will also be potable.

To be more accessible, it will be connected by an expressway and a metro line. Among these, the Centre has already approved tenders for the expressway between Dholera and Ahmedabad.

Shivhare added, "This is largely a saline land, and converting it into an industrial city is the best way for development and ensuring jobs for the people of the region."
