Curiosity is one of those main things that motivates you to travel and propels your way to adventures, enabling you to know the unknown, feel the unseen and hear the unheard. And experiencing the unknown and acquiring the ability to deal with it can teach you important skills such as planning and organization, decision making etc., which can’t be just bought or earned through education. What more? Travelling can also make you much more confident, independent and flexible towards new food, culture, and lifestyle.
Further, traveling also affects your mindset, broadens your perspective and helps you to face the challenges bravely. It teaches you to value experience over things and enables you to learn the art of living in the moment. Most importantly, through traveling, you learn wisdom and tolerance. If all that is not enough, traveling opens new avenues for personal and professional development too.
While in the past, our ancestors used to travel in search of inner peace or making new discoveries, today, people majorly opt for adventure travel to break the routine, discover the undiscovered and get their adrenaline rush. This has given a tremendous boost to the adventure tourism in the country.
Adventure Tourism: A trend that is ‘High’ at the moment
Research indicates that the adventure travel market in the country is increasing by 200 per cent on year-on-year basis. The popular regions in India that have earned huge revenue through adventure tourism include Himachal Pradesh (Rs 486 crore) and Uttarakhand (Rs 486 crore) as registered in 2015. Even though Leh, Sangam, Sonmarg and Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir face infrastructural bottlenecks such as connectivity issues, lack of basic facilities and absence of internet communication, they have accounted for nearly Rs 246 crore of the entire Rs 1815 crore adventure tourism market. These numbers clearly speak that adventure travel is a growing trend in the country.
Adventure travel generally attracts passionate travelers who possess the risk-taking ability and high-value customers who are willing to pay a premium for an exciting and authentic experience. While, majority of the domestic adventure tourists of the country opting for Northern, Eastern and North-Eastern zone states spend around Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 per head per trip for the adventure packages, tourists preferring the Southern and Western zone states spend around Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 per head per trip for adventure packages.
Adventure can be broadly classified into hard adventure and soft adventure. Both hard and soft adventures are highly lucrative segments of the adventure tourism sector. The two soft adventure land-based activities include Wildlife/Jeep Safaris and Camping. In India, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are the three states providing almost the complete portfolio of land-based adventure activities. Parasailing, Hot air Ballooning and Paragliding are the three main soft adventure air-based activities. Goa, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim are the most popular states where such adventure activities are conducted by various tour operators. Water Rafting and Boat Safari are the two main soft adventure water-based activities popular in Uttarakhand, Kerala and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
While majority of the adventure tour operators are engaged in soft adventure activities, only few conduct hard adventure activities. One of the top activities in hard adventure includes Trekking. Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are the main states that provide almost a complete portfolio for this category of adventure activity.
Typically, summer months (especially April, May and June) are considered to be the ideal time to undertake adventure travel and half of the total travel enthusiasts across all the months embark on adventure tourism this time of the year. Generally, foreign tourists comprise of 12.85 per cent of total 34.6 lakh adventure tourists.
