Research studies prove that colours have a psychological effect on people. Selection of colours plays a pivotal role in deciding overall mood of a particular room. Also, it has the power to cover any blemishes in the wall caused by dampness. Considering metros like Chennai which is prone to varied weather conditions, maintenance of the walls is prominent. Painting a room is a time consuming process and thus it is obvious to expect wall paints to last longer. Though proper maintenance of the walls not only decides the fate of paint, it is one of the effective ways to extend the life span of wall paint. Use of premium paint and materials, equipping best application techniques by the workman are the other ways to ensure long lasting wall paint. Here we suggest some of the chief factors to sustain wall paints for a long time.

A well-plastered wall:

Plastering a wall properly is essential for a long lasting paint work. That is, a loosely plastered wall is prone to develop cracks and damage the wall paint. Main reason behind this is the insufficient curing time. Allow adequate time of about 7- 21 days to keep the cement well hydrated so that it sets well. This will ensure a good plastering of walls. It is advisable to have a check of bad plastering by tapping on the wall. A hollow sound indicates that plaster is detached from the brick which needs to be reworked.

Use primer for good adhesion:

Use of good primer is important for proper sealing of walls. It prevents any crumble or peeling off of paint since it serves as a base for binding the paint with the surface. Eventually, a primer will increase the life of wall paint and also enhance the finishing of paint. Allow adequate time for the primer to dry after application. Also make sure to scrap off the wall properly with a sand paper and make it grime free before the application of primer.

Use Plaster of Paris:

To have a smooth finishing of walls, make use of POP (Plaster of Paris) to fill every uneven surface like cracks and holes in the walls. After the application of POP, the wall becomes a completely smooth surface on which the paint can be applied. Remember to sand the portion of Plaster of Paris before painting the wall.

Prevent the walls from dampness:

Seeping of water into the walls spoils the appearance of wall paint. This can be easily identified by the damp patches that appear on the wall surface which later on develops into deep cracks. Identify any water logging in the external wall surfaces to prevent this wall dampness. In case of flats in Chennai, make sure that a layer of epoxy waterproof coating is applied to the ceiling and room walls to combat external water absorption. Eventually, the life span of the wall paint extends. Try to make use of wall tiles or cement sheet boards to prevent the walls from seeping out water.

Cleaning of walls:

After the application of paint, make sure that the walls are maintained properly. Wipe the wall with damp cloth occasionally to extend the life span of wall paint and give a fresh look. If your wall is affected by fungus due to dampness, a mixture of chlorine bleach and water in the ratio 1:3 will revive the appearance of the wall.

Wall paints have the capacity to boost the look of a room if correctly chosen. Proper maintenance of walls is essential to provide a long lasting span of paints used.
