A class X dropout, this 41-year-old mother is all set to enroll as a lawyer in Kerala
Neena KG, a mother of two, battled all odds to complete her LLB course at Government Law College, Ernakulam.
It is said that age is just a number. Forty-one-year-old Neena KG is an example of this. A single mother of two from Vaduthala, Kochi, she had to overcome a number of hurdles to become a lawyer.
Eight years ago Neena was just a school dropout. However, things took a turn for the better when she signed up for the Kerala Literacy Mission’s continuing education programme to clear her class X exams. Later, she pursued a full-fledged LLB course.
At a time when her graduate daughter is considering whether to pursue postgraduation or take up a job, Neena is all set enrol as a lawyer with the Bar Council of Kerala on December 15.
“It was five years of toil, balancing work with studies. But the reward is fulfilling,” she told The Hindu.
Neena’s uplifting journey
Neena got married while she was in class X and was forced to discontinue her academics. Soon after, she become a mother of two children. In order to support her family, she began looking for a job.
In a conversation with the New Indian Express, she said,
“Finding a job without finishing school was quite difficult. That was when I realised the importance of continuing my studies. However, later, I was hired as a clerk at a lawyer’s office where I learnt typing.”
One of Neena’s neighbours, who was also on a mission to continue his education, told her about the class X equivalency exam. She took it up immediately and even followed it up by passing class XI and XII in 2010-11 through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).
The next thing on the 41-year-old’s wishlist was to prepare and appear for the law entrance examination. She pursued that by balancing work and studies and finally joined the Government Law College, Ernakulam.
“It was one of the happiest days of my life. I was a step closer to my dream. I didn’t discontinue though I was in college. It was difficult and I must thank my family, boss and teachers for making it easier. I hope I can start practising law as my boss’ junior in the same office. That’s my new dream,” reports the New Indian Express.
