How to Set Goals That Will Turn an Average Team Into All-Stars

How to Set Goals That Will Turn an Average Team Into All-Stars

Wednesday September 13, 2017 , 3 min Read

Having your company strategy in place means nothing if your team doesn't have a clue how to turn that strategy into an effective plan of action. That's where the beauty of setting goals comes into the picture. When you set goals with your employees, you boost employee engagement and retention as well as help each member of the team understand their role in the overall strategy. That is why you should set goals with your team and not for them. In addition to saving time and improving efficiency, setting goals also gives your team a road map for the coming year.

To help the process of setting goals run smoothly, here's a five-step plan for you to follow:

All goals should be SMART

When it comes to setting goals with your team, ensure that the objectives are SMART – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-related. The more specific the goal is, the more likely it is that your team can achieve it successfully. The goal has to feel like a milestone and be crucial to the overall strategy. Also, when it has a deadline, your team will work towards it with fervor.

Create a plan

An important part of goal-setting is assigning different team members to different tasks so that there is no overlapping of duties. Also, an action plan helps keep track of the progress of each member towards the same goal. It also ensures that each member has the necessary tools like software and other resources to complete their tasks.

Share your vision with your team

Instead of telling your team members what you expect of them, share your vision for your goals with your team members. Help them understand why the goals are important and how they will contribute to the revenue that your company will gain because of them. Encourage them to share ideas on how they can go about achieving those goals. By doing this, you will not only be on the same page as your team members, but will also motivate them to work towards the goal.

Identify your team's strengths

If you don't know the strengths of your team members and their areas of improvement, you'll never be able to set realistic goals. Before assigning tasks, make sure you're not only capitalizing on their strengths, but also granting them opportunities to grow. When you encourage them to learn from each other's mistakes, you better team morale.

Check in with your team regularly

After you've laid down the plan of action and assigned tasks, allow your team members to work out how they want to achieve their individual goals. Grant them autonomy, but also check in every once in a while to note their progress.

By following the above-mentioned steps, you can put in place a simple goal-setting process at your company. Doing this will not only boost engagement, but will also align strategy and improve efficiency.
