Facebook suspends 200 apps for data misuse; PacketZoom boosts mobile app speed; Tencent posts stellar Q1

In the aftermath of the Cambridge Analytica scandal that has rocked Facebook over the last two months, the social networking giant announced it has suspended “around 200 apps” on its platform for data misuse. These apps were identified in the course of Facebook’s ongoing audit of its own platform, which has served as a fertile ground for third-party apps to breach user privacy.


Silicon Valley-based PacketZoom has developed an App Performance Management and Optimisation platform to help app publishers speed up delivery by analysing, controlling, and fixing network-related issues in real time. PacketZoom provides a lightweight software development kit that app developers can use to eliminate roadblocks in the ‘last mile’ delivery of mobile content.

Chinese tech company Tencent Holdings Ltd, the highest-valued tech company and the second-most valuable public company in Asia, posted its earnings report for Q1 2018, beating all expectations. The company revealed that it earned net revenue of 73.5 billion yuan (about $11.6 billion) and a net profit of 23.3 billion yuan (almost $3.7 billion), increasing both by 48 percent and 61 percent year-on-year, respectively. The phenomenal performance was pushed by Tencent’s rapidly growing mobile games division and the success of titles like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite.


In an interview, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the tech giant’s music streaming service Apple Music had crossed 50 million subscribers, including about 8 million free trial subscribers. The service has seen phenomenal growth since its launch in June 2015, diversifying into video in 2016 with plans for original video content on the horizon. Expect more updates on June 4-8 at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference.


Facebook has released a Community Standards Enforcement Report with details of how the social media giant has gone about enforcing its Community Standards after publishing its internal guidelines about the same a few weeks ago. The report reveals Facebook took down 837 million spam posts, 21 million posts featuring adult nudity and sexual activity, 3.5 million post with violent content, and 2.5 million posts of hate speech in Q1 2018.
