How IOT will navigate the future of smart cities

India is currently ranked as one of the most populous nations in the world with over 1.3 billion people, second only to China, and they don’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. According to a United Nation’s report, India is predicted to overtake China as the world’s most populous nation by 2022 and this will mostly be as a result of a population explosion in the urban regions with a projected estimate of 300 million residents.

These alarming stats have called for government to step up as in terms of infrastructural provisions and development to say this least. This increase in population would surely take its toll on existing infrastructure and environmental resources.

It will be no easy task to manage the strain on this resources but a douse of technological solution is the best bet to handling this condition. With internet of things, government in cities will be better able to deliver efficient and effective services. From asset control, effective transportation, to low cost of living, IOT will make living in smart cities more than bearable. It will improve the overall lives of the residents. Prime Minister Modi’s Smart Cities Mission to develop 100 cities all over the country making them citizen friendly and sustainable is a peek into the revolutionary capabilities that IOT promises.

Smart Internet solutions

With connected infrastructures and the other unprecedented powers of IOT, the actualization of the “smart cities mission” in the 100 selected cities is not some distant future “mere” possibility. The success of smart city is bound to few key components and internet of things make up the critical path.

Gartner Inc reports that 8.4 Billion Connected "Things" Will Be in Use in 2017 which is a huge 31 Percent increase from last year and It is predicted that by 2020 this figure will see a huge jump to more than 20 billion connected things sending data all over the world.

Internet of things is ideally the key to making smart cities what they should be. Its basic concept is improving efficiency and productiveness by connecting almost any device to the Internet. These devices could be Cookers, coffee machines, washing machines, headphones, lamps, wearable devices, to name a few. Its application to factory equipments and also to components of machines, such as the drill of an oil rig is also groundbreaking. The possibilities to what can be achieved with IOT are endless.

The use of IOT will be even more advantageous in the development of smart cities in India Since its scope goes beyond communication. Its application to transportation network would lessen the burden on the coordination of movement and revolutionize transportation as a whole. IOT would help smart cities reduce waste and improve efficiency for energy use and otherwise. It would improve the management of sanitation, healthcare and our lives overall.

With this, urban cites come smart cities will bring relief to residents in more ways than we can imagine. It will help to handle infrastructural management and allow for more fluid development. Take the issue of jammed traffic and blockage, the technological solution would cause for more efficient decision making like smart parking and smart sensors in road lights. It would allow for effective optimization of routes and schedules based on accurate data.

IoT can play a huge role in India’s big fight against mismanages waste. How?

With the introduction of smart rubbish canisters empowered by IoT work with remote systems, management and control of waste can be adequately monitored. Smart sensors which would inform authorities of trash nuisances could be deployed to cities. On a plus side, since IoT is able to work on its own with little or no human coordination, accuracy and proficiency is greatly promoted.

IoT has manifolds of application in the healthcare sector and will literally save lives in these Indian cities through its enhancement of healthcare gadgets and services. It more than have the capability to keep patients safe and healthy and also improve the way treatments are doled out by physicians.

Even more amazing is that the families of these patients need not depend on the medical officers to keep track of the medical situations of their loved one. IoT does it for them. With real-time location system badges families can now track the progress of their loved ones from the surgeon’s office to the surgical table and to the recovery unit.

Very many cities all over the world are already starting to adopt the smart city model - From transportation coordination in Barcelona, Spain, to the very fancied Robocars and even flood management in Singapore, optimization of daily activities and accurate gathering of data have been taken to a whole new level. These are but a few examples of how the smart city model, via internet of things, will help governments and cities make better infrastructure decisions.

The rush for a computerized India is the perfect timing for developers to contribute in building better and smarter cities. At the moment, there are over 4 million application engineers in India making some difference (Or trying to) at IoT related ventures. IoT can change the way we see the world and India could very well be bearing the lens.
