Why nurturing healthy skepticism can be good for you

Why nurturing healthy skepticism can be good for you

Friday May 12, 2017 , 3 min Read

Skepticism can be simply defined as the doctrine that true knowledge or knowledge in a particular area is uncertain. Skepticism isn't necessarily bad as it helps you develop an attitude of doubt that makes you question what’s going on. Healthy skepticism is when you're not doubting something just for the sake of it and you are questioning things to discover a truth that will help you arrive at a logical decision. Unhealthy skepticism is nothing but paranoia. Everybody should be a good skeptic so that they don't simply assume that whatever is told to them is true.

Here are five reasons why nurturing a healthy skepticism can be good for you.

You learn not to accept everything at face value

We live in a digital world and every brand is using all possible means and tactics to convince consumers to buy their products. A healthy skepticism will make you question campaigns and advertisements that harp on features that seem unreal. It will help you look beyond powerful emotional appeals and gauge the value of a product in its true sense. In addition, it will help you develop a powerful intuition that will ultimately aid you in challenging anyone's claim of truth.

You learn to play the devil's advocate when need be

Playing the devil's advocate once in a while isn't a bad idea. It helps you gauge things from a different perspective. Nurturing a healthy skepticism allows you to take a stance you don't necessarily agree with, but you do so just for the sake of argument. When you train your mind to view a debate from a variety of standpoints, you develop a better understanding of a problem.

You learn to use logic and intuition

When you develop a healthy skepticism, you train your mind to doubt other people's claims by using logic and intuition. This not only makes you a better thinker, but it also helps you learn to rely on logic as well as intuition at the same time instead of employing one over the other. This way you can bank on evidence and instinct to arrive at a logical conclusion.

You learn how to detect deception

People constantly make claims that affect our daily lives. From politicians running for office to brands marketing their products, we are barraged with decisions that require us to act. In such situations, it is important to distinguish true claims from false claims. And this can be achieved only when one learns the art of detecting deception through positive skepticism.

You will learn how to detect biases easily

Once you have developed a healthy skepticism, you'll be able to determine whether sources of information and analysis are impartial or biased. When you ask yourself often what the other side of the story is, you'll be able to decipher if someone is trying to persuade you through emotional appeal. This will help you differentiate between content that aims to influence you and content that simply wishes to inform you.

A healthy skepticism can lead to problem-solving, creativity, and innovation. It also helps us develop the ability to think critically about the world around us.
