Anand Mahindra’s viral tweet on 'Khatiya-vator' showcases Indian jugaad at its best
Anand Mahindra, Chairman of Mahindra Group, tweeted a video recently in which a construction vehicle can be seen attached with a cot bed being used as an excavator.
Indians are known for their jugaad, which means an innovative and flexible approach to solve a problem. From making instant noodles over an iron to converting an old scooter into a repair shop like Yusuf Farukh Shaikh, people have found many hacks to make their lives easier.
What has now captured netizens' imagination is a video of a makeshift excavator, made by using a kathiya or cot bed.

The 30-second video was posted on Twitter by Anand Mahindra, Chairman of Mahindra Group, who is known for his wit as well as his interest in low-cost innovation. He tweeted saying:
“I think the phrase ‘Necessity is the mother of invention’ was invented by Indians!” “Here’s a new product our farm & construction sectors will have to consider as a replacement for an excavator: A ‘Khatiya-vator’.”
The video showcases a person using the makeshift excavator made from cot bed to pick up a load of earth.

This isn’t the first time Mahindra has expressed his interest in local innovations. Last year, he had tweeted a photo of a cobbler in Haryana and said that he should be teaching at the Indian Institute of Management. Mahindra was impressed by the cobbler’s originality in marketing his shop with a quirky tagline stating, ‘Hospital for injured shoes by Dr Narseeram’. He had also mentioned the timings for the OPD where he could be consulted for the broken shoes, reports NDTV.
